Steve Cooper has been officially appointed as Sunderland’s new permanent manager.

While the team looks for a new permanent manager, journalist Dom Shaw predicts Sunderland will make a “statement appointment”

of a “tremendous” manager this summer.

Latest from Sunderland manager

In February, after just four wins in 12 games during a two-month losing run, Michael Beale was sacked as manager.

Since then, Mike Dodds has taken over as interim manager, but the squad has only managed to pick up one point as things have gone

terribly wrong. He will continue to lead the Stadium of Light until the end of the current campaignat which point it is highly likely

that a new permanent manager will be named.

Potential Sunderland managers have surfaced, including Nuno Espirito Santo’s replacement at the City Ground earlier this season,

Steve Cooper, the former manager of Nottingham Forest. Highly rated young Reims manager Will Still has also long been a target, with

persistent speculations linking him to the position.

Even though it seems like the ship has sailed, there were rumors that Alex Neil might rejoin the Black Cats after leaving to sign with Stoke City in the summer of 2022.

Supported in hiring a “tremendous” manager for Sunderland

Shaw thinks Cooper would make a great manager for Sunderland in a Q&A for We Are Sunderland [via Sunderland News]:

“They can’t afford to have another bad appointment after months of planning. Is Steve Cooper tempted to return to the Championship

by Sunderland? He is a model player when it comes to working with young players, having completed an incredible job at Nottingham

Forest. He would schedule a noteworthy appointment.
