The finance expert says there’s one thing the Tractor Boys can’t afford to do if they get promoted.

Ipswich Town has received a warning from football financial specialist Kieran Maguire ahead of their possible

promotion to the Premier League.

Kieran Maguire issues an Ipswich Premier League warning.

In the event that Town is promoted to the Premier League, Maguire has advised them not to overspend in case

they are sent back to the second division.

Talking on BBC Radio Suffolk, the sports finance specialist from the University of Liverpool stated, via EADT:

“We’ve seen a few clubs go up in the past, spend a fortune, and then it doesn’t work out and they crash and burn

back to the Championship.”

“Suddenly, you had players with weekly contracts costing £40,000 or £50,000. Sure, they’ve presumably made

a small concession on relegation clauses, but in the Championship, you have to reimburse Premier League

salaries.

“That can take a huge hit to the club’s finances.”Making the right choices is vitally important.

You need to have a long-term plan, and since there are three possible outcomes in ten days, that is obviously a

very long time in football.

“Three wins or three losses can have a significant effect on promotion, relegation, and other outcomes.

“Having a board who are in line in thinking with the manager as to the strategy of the club to, first of all,

establish yourself in the Premier League and then push on from there, is absolutely critical.”

The huge increase in money that Ipswich would earn from TV rights would be one financial benefit of an

apparently inevitable promotion.

Not only would being in the Premier League benefit Ipswich municipality as a football team,

but also Ipswich as a municipality.
