Belichick’s Team Skeptical: Would Jerry Jones Ever Surrender Control of the Cowboys?
Bill Belichick’s Group Reportedly Unsure If Jerry Jones Would Give Up Control of the Cowboys
Some of our questions will be answered in about a month, and by then, it’s highly likely the Dallas Cowboys’ season will be over. One of the most pressing questions to be resolved is: Who will be the team’s head coach in 2025?
Currently, Mike McCarthy holds the position, but he’s in the final year of his original contract, and given the challenges of this season, the possibility of the Cowboys moving on seems plausible, if not likely. This sentiment has been circulating throughout 2024.
Interestingly, University of North Carolina head coach Bill Belichick and his evaluation group reportedly viewed Dallas as a potential landing spot for Belichick’s return to the NFL in 2025. While Belichick is now coaching college football and thus not an immediate contender for the Cowboys’ job, it remains unclear how this impacts McCarthy’s future.
ESPN’s Seth Wickersham reported on Belichick’s transition to college coaching and noted that Dallas was on his radar as a potential destination. Belichick, known for his ability to turn a talented roster into a cohesive team, could have been an option—provided Cowboys owner Jerry Jones was willing to part ways with McCarthy and give Belichick control. However, Jones’ reputation for maintaining authority over the team raises doubts about such a scenario.
As for the broader coaching market, Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson appears to be the top candidate for 2025 openings. According to Wickersham, Belichick’s camp believes Johnson is likely to land with the Chicago Bears, whom they view as the most attractive job opportunity. With a potential franchise quarterback in Caleb Williams and a strong offensive foundation, Chicago seems poised to appeal to head coaching prospects.
This situation leaves the Cowboys in a precarious position. Without Belichick in the mix and with other high-profile candidates favoring teams like the Bears, Dallas may find itself settling for a less desirable option. This could make retaining McCarthy a more practical choice than many expect.
In about a month, we’ll start getting clarity on these issues. Until then, the clock is ticking for the Cowboys.
