JUST IN: Callum McGregor finally makes a career decision on leaving Celtic this summer.

Callum McGregor, the captain of Celtic, has given an explanation for why, despite being linked to a lucrative Premier League transfer, he chose to stay at Parkhead in the summer.

The Hoops’ nine-time winning squad was destroyed a year ago, forcing them to undertake a significant rebuild. Some chose to move south in search of better opportunities, including Ryan Christie, Odsonne Edouard, and Kristoffer Ajer.

But McGregor showed no intention in following suit. This is true even though it was rumored that Brendan Rodgers was eager to bring him to King Power Stadium [Scottish Sun].

Furthermore, Callum—who was named captain following Ange Postecoglou’s appointment—has clarified why he never considered moving to England with his former colleagues.

The Daily Record cited the midfield player as saying, “No, not at all.” Even if our season wasn’t great, I knew right immediately that we had to make things right. That was what spurred me on. I devoted my future to this club because I love it, so I took it personally. I’ll be the happiest guy alive if we win, and I’ll shut up for three days if we lose.

It was never my intention to give up and go for the simple route. I felt compelled to return and correct the record. I wanted to demonstrate to them that it was an isolated incident and that we could return.

“Would winning the trophy as captain be the apex of my career? Indeed.

Callum McGregor about to reap the rewards for his Celtic loyalty

Callum reaffirmed his allegiance to Celtic by agreeing to a new five-year contract back in September. Should he remain for the entire term, he will reach the age of thirty-two. McGregor has a good chance of becoming Parkhead’s one-club man in this situation.

The Lennoxtown Academy graduate was always rewarded for his choice when he was named the formal captaincy successor to Scott Brown. McGregor has taken the lead and dazzled Celtic fans with his performances.

But the upcoming season might be set to get even better. Callum will almost certainly return to the main arena of the UEFA Champions League if he helps Celtic win the Scottish Premiership. That will surely be something that supports his choice even more.

There were certain players we simply couldn’t afford to part with during our reconstruction. Even though players like Edouard, Ajer, and Christie were very important to the cause, it was obvious for a while that they would probably be leaving.

But it seemed like losing McGregor would be the greatest catastrophe of them all. Regarding his affiliations and long-term goals, he has never shied away from stating his views. In the past, he has also backed that with additional contracts.

And now, as we stand so close to title success, it looks as though Callum is about to achieve exactly what it was that made him stay at Parkhead.
