Matt Godden finalizes paper works to move to Charlton Athletic in summer

Charlton Athletic’s striker shortlist includes Coventry City’s Matt Godden.

The 32-year-old from Canterbury is signed to the Sky Blues until the summer of 2025.

Godden had previously been connected with the Addicks when at Stevenage.

However, when he left in June 2018, he signed with Peterborough United for a six-figure amount.

Godden scored 18 goals in 48 games for Posh in one season before moving to Coventry for £75,000. The forward has 50 goals in 155 matches for City and has made 34 appearances this season, 23 of which have been starts.

Godden began his career in non-league football and the Kent area, with successful spells at Dartford and Ebbsfleet.

He earned League One promotion with the Sky Blues in 2020 and was named to the PFA Team of the Year for that season.

Godden was linked with Derby and Oxford before extending his time at Coventry in August.

This summer, the Addicks will want to sign a goalkeeper as a top priority.

Charlton already has two senior goalkeepers under contract, Harry Isted and Ashley Maynard-Brewer, who have struggled to impress in a leaky backline that has yielded 65 goals in 46 League One games.
Maynard-Brewer did not appear once when Nathan Jones replaced Michael Appleton at the beginning of February.

However, Isted, who worked under Jones at Luton, only managed two clean sheets in his remaining 16 appearances.

Maynard-Brewer’s contract extends until 2026, while Isted’s terms last at least until 2025.
