Lions sign James Turner, a kicker from Michigan, as a UDFA
The kicker the Detroit Lions have acquired can rival Michael Badgley
James Turner, a former kicker for the Michigan Wolverines,
is reportedly signing an undrafted free agent contract with the Lions.
In addition, he scored 119 points overall and broke the record for most extra points converted in a season with 65.
A few NFL teams reportedly expressed interest in Michigan Panthers kicker Jake Bates,
who has had success kicking from a distance at Ford Field, prior to the draft.
Bates cannot sign a contract with an NFL team until the UFL season is over.
Given that new NFL regulations would allow kickers to participate more in tackling returners,
Holmes stated during the offseason that the team might have two
or three kickers vying for the starting position when training camp begins.
Riley Patterson briefly took Badgley’s job during the previous season,
but he was signed again this offseason and is anticipated to be considered for the kicker position in 2024.
