Rangers’ £4.5m man a weak-link as pundit hails duo Clement should have signed

Rangers’ £4.5m man a weak-link as pundit hails duo Clement should have signed

Rangers have been told they could live to regret not signing Lawrence Shankland or Bojan Miovski with Cyriel Dessers maybe too inconsistent to be relied upon in a Scottish Premiership title race.

Following a remarkable surge of form either side of Christmas, last week’s 2-1 victory over Aberdeen was a return to the mean.

Rangers made hard work of Neil Warnock’s deep-lying Dons,

with Cyriel Dessers, clinical in previous appearances, grabbing at chances, being wasteful and wayward.

Declare that Rangers might now sign a millions free agent striker this year who has 70 career goals.

Despite undeniable improvements in his game since Philippe Clement replaced Mick Beale in the Ibrox dugout,

Dessers has only eight goals in 21 league appearances.

In contrast, Lawrence Shankland and Aberdeen’s Bojan Miovski have 17 and 13 goals, respectively, breaching the 20-goal mark across all competitions.

And, speaking with Clyde Super Scoreboard,

former Scotland international Charlie Mulgrew wonders if Rangers’ inability to attract a new striker to the blue side of Glasgow will result in the trophy being decked with green-and-white ribbons again in May.

Rangers still rely on Cyriel Dessers. “Dessers looks like he needs three chances to score.

Mulgrew says, “Three or four chances.” “If they hit the balls over the top in behind for Dessers, I don’t expect him to score.”

“And I think they missed a trick there by not signing Lawrence Shankland or Bojan Miovski.”

Miovski, who Sky Sports estimates is worth roughly £8 million,

was always going to be out of Rangers’ price range in the winter transfer window. Shankland, the division’s Golden Boot leader,

would have cost a similar amount,

with CEO Andrew McKinlay saying that any Premiership club interested in signing the prolific goal-scorer from Hearts would have to pay a national record sum of more than £4.5 million.

Philippe Clement’s side can win tonight.
Rangers host Ross County tonight at Ibrox,

with Dessers expected to start again while Danilo remains unavailable.

Clement’s side will draw level with Old Firm rivals Celtic at the top if they win against a team lying second from bottom.

Rangers might potentially move into first place if they defeat Ross County by more than two clear goals.
