Rangers v Aberdeen – Half-time verdict, Gers have to keep the head in more way than one

Glasgow Rangers’ games against Aberdeen are never dull or uncomplicated,

and Neil Warnock was never going to send out a team that wasn’t revved up.

The veteran manager is meeting Gers boss Philippe Clement for the first time in his long career,

with his new side already having a good record against the men from Ibrox this season, with the exception of the league cup final.

Rangers will be trying to keep Aberdeen at bay while also ensuring Jack Butland has a quiet second half.

Clement went with a bold starting XI, pairing Tom Lawrence with John Lundstram in midfield,

two players who are both comfortable on the ball and competitive  physically.

The other surprise was Cyriel Dessers’ return after Fabio Silva scored at the weekend;

nonetheless, his form since the winter break has been remarkable.

Pre-match, he appeared focused and mindful of the challenge at hand against a muscular Aberdeen line-up.

Rangers got out to a fast start, pinning Aberdeen in the early minutes with swift passes and even faster counterattacks in transition.

One of which resulted in the opening goal by Rabbi Matondo.

Rangers played with pace and passion, but there was a lack of control for much of the first half; passes were rushed,

and we were attempting to play the killer ball too quickly.

We can maintain our pace of play and pass without taking too many touches,

but we need to be more composed in the final third; if Matondo had done so, he would have had a second.

Drive into the space when it is available, rather than cutting inside.

It’s a little thing, but it could pay off in the second half.
