If Rangers did this in January, Andy Halliday would now have them as title favourites

Andy Halliday reckons if Rangers signed a reputable striker in January, he would now install them as favourites to win the Scottish Premiership.

Fans of the Light Blues hoped that a No. 9 would be acquired to assist Cyriel Dessers.

Danilo and Kemar Roofe are both out for the foreseeable future due to injuries,

and while Fabio Silva was signed on loan from Wolves,

the £35 million Portuguese does not look to be a true striker.

Abdallah Sima was a prolific goal scorer with Rangers before representing Senegal at AFCON.

The winger then sustained a significant thigh injury,

potentially leaving Rangers bereft of goal-scoring options.

Former Rangers midfielder Halliday, who joined Motherwell in January after leaving Hearts,

believes his former club cannot be considered championship favourites right now.

However, if they had recruited a proven goal scorer last month,

he believes they would have a better chance of beating Celtic to the league title.

Halliday believes Dessers, who has been playing well recently,

is unpredictable and required competition in the previous window to help Rangers win more trophies this season.

Andy Halliday told the Open Goal podcast: “For me,

if Rangers went and got a No9 in January who you think is going to score 15 goals between now and the end of the season,

then I’d maybe say ‘d’you know what, they are favourites for the title’.”

“And it’s tough on Dessers because he’s done so well recently,

but it’s one of those situations where you never know what you’re going to get (from him).

“For me – and I’ve said this for the last couple of years, and both times I’ve been wrong

– but I think this one will come down to the wire because I still believe both clubs will drop points –

there are still two Old Firm games.
