It’s time for the Steelers to start winning some postseason games, according to team owner Art Rooney II, and improving quarterback play would be a good place to start.

The Steelers had anticipated that Kenny Pickett would progress in his second season, but instead he suffered an ankle injury that kept him out of four games towards the end of the year. With Pickett playing as a backup, the Steelers continued to use Mason Rudolph through Week 18 and their Wild Card loss to the Bills. However, Rooney stated on Monday that the team still has faith in their 2022 first-round pick.

According to Joe Rutter of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, Rooney stated, “We still feel good about Kenny Pickett and his future. We’ve talked about it, and he knows he needs to work hard to take the next step.”

Following the Bills defeat, head coach Mike Tomlin stated that the team would compete for Pickett in 2024 and that Rudolph might play a role in that strategy. Although his contract is up, Rooney stated that the team would welcome him back.

“When we do get quality play at the quarterback position, Mason showed what we were capable of,” Rooney stated.

The Steelers are hiring a new offensive coordinator and that will be an important part of any bid for postseason success, but the idea of running it back at quarterback while also aiming for a big jump as a team will likely strike some as an incongruous approach to next season.
