The Boston Celtics will soon have another option available to them as a free agent. Otto Porter Jr., a former trade target of the Celtics, has been dismissed by the Utah Jazz, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic via his X account.

At the trade deadline, the Raptors acquired Ochai Agbaji and former Celtics big man Kelly Olynyk by trading Porter to the Jazz. Porter did not participate in any Jazz games. Porter has appeared in 15 games this season, scoring 2.6 points and pulling down 1.9 rebounds while shooting 34.8% from three and 42.4% from the field. Porter has only played in 23 games overall since assisting the Warriors in winning the championship in 2022 due to injuries sustained during the previous two seasons.

Porter would provide championship experience to the Celtics team, despite his potential for injury.

Signing him would have a condition, though.

He would not be eligible for the playoffs since the Jazz failed to waive him by the deadline on March 1.

It could be wiser for the Celtics to use their final roster space on a postseason player.

Porter might possibly be added when the forthcoming offseason gets underway.

The Celtics had looked considering acquiring him using the trade exception for Grant Williams,

according to Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports.

League insiders claim that Boston has been considering a number of options to bolster

the Celtics’ bench from elsewhere at the top of the Eastern Conference. According to sources,

Boston’s options for adding players will probably be limited to using its $6.25 million traded-player exception,

which the Celtics may use to sign a seasoned player like Otto Porter Jr. Fischer wrote about this on February 6.

With a contract that owed him $6.3 million, Oster would have qualified for

the Celtics’ exception, as teams are allowed to sign players whose salaries exceed

their exception by up to $100,000. Rather,

the Celtics acquired Jaden Springer from the Philadelphia 76ers by using a portion of the exception.

Porter will undoubtedly become available, and the Celtics have the option to sign him directly.

If they do, they will have succeeded in hitting one target and utilized the exception to hit another.
