Cowboys Urged to Sign Ex-Chiefs RB After Tony Pollard Departure
The Dallas Cowboys are being encouraged to make a play for a former Kansas City Chiefs running back as the craziness of free agency has
begun. Tony Pollard left the team to join the Tennessee Titans, but the team hasn’t found a replacement yet.
And it’s not just Pollard that has to be replaced, backup RB Rico Dowdle is also expected to leave. That’s why Blogging the Boys
writer Brian Martin thinks the team should pursue Clyde Edwards-Helaire.
“Taking a chance on Edwards-Helaire isn’t a bad idea, considering the lack of a proven commodity at the RB position right now in Dallas,”
Martin commented on March 11. The Cowboys haven’t been afraid to make low-risk, high-reward signings like this one in the past.
Furthermore, if it didn’t work out, signing him and sending him to camp for a “looksee” wouldn’t be monetarily detrimental.
Martin acknowledges that Edwards-Helaire and current Cowboys running back Deuce Vaughn share a similar build. However, “CEH” has
significantly more experience, and they both bring quite different skill sets as compact runners.
Clyde Edwards-Helaire As a Fit in Dallas After Chiefs Run
When the Chiefs picked Edwards-Helaire with the 32nd overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, he made an instant impact. With an average
of 4.4 yards per run, the former LSU Tiger played up to his draft billing, amassing 803 rushing yards and four touchdowns.
Nevertheless, in recent years, his importance has gradually diminished. His total touches and yards have dropped in each of the last three
seasons, according to Pro Football Reference. Isiah Pacheco’s entrance also solidified the fact
that CEH is no longer the most powerful person in the room.
And while Cowboys fans might not find it appealing, his prospective salary certainly should. Spotrac forecasts that whoever signs
Edwards-Helaire will pay $1.6 million for a one-year contract.
That is amazing value for a player who was once a lead back and first-round pick. Signing that kind of arrangement doesn’t really carry
any risk, as Martin noted in his article. It makes financial and logistical sense for Dallas to sign
someone like Helaire if they do not intend to resign a headliner.
Former Cowboys RB Tony Pollard Heads to Tennessee
Tony Pollard, the former running back for Dallas, is on his way to the AFC South while the Cowboys straighten out their running back
situation. Reporter Aaron Wilson of KPRC2 reported on March 11 that Pollard was scheduled
to sign a free agent contract with the Tennessee Titans.
Adam Schefter, an ESPN insider, soon disclosed the terms of Pollard’s Tennessee contract.
For Pollard, who was a Dallas franchise tag player in 2023, that’s a big contract. He made slightly over $10 million last season with that
tag, so he won’t be taking a significant pay reduction in his next contract.
