The Chicago Bears reportedly want to build a new stadium with a dome south of Soldier Field. The stadium and adjacent park area will be developed with a $2 billion investment as part of this effort, providing year-round community amenities.

Chicago would be in a better position to compete to host major events like the NCAA Final Four and Super Bowls if a domed stadium were built.

The Bears’ president and CEO, Kevin Warren, reaffirmed the team’s commitment to making this large investment toward the city’s infrastructure. In addition to stressing the stadium’s ability to host major events, create jobs, and improve public areas for both locals and tourists, he emphasized the stadium’s revolutionary potential.

After a 326-acre parcel of land in Arlington Heights, Illinois, was purchased last year, plans to build a stadium there encountered difficulties, which led to the search for other locations. Strong local support is indicated by recent polling data, with 77% of Chicagoans voting in favor of the team staying in the city.

With a seating capacity of 61,500, Soldier Field—the present home of the Bears—is the NFL‘s smallest stadium. It was built in 1924 and is also the league’s oldest. The team’s lease at Soldier Field is set to expire in 2033, but there are options for an early termination under specific circumstances. This is in spite of a major refurbishment that took place in the early 2000s.
