Looming Problem for Rangers as Utility Man struggling with potential injury
Kevin Thomson believes that a potential injury to Rangers utility player Dujon Sterling will be a major “worry” for Ibrox manager Philippe Clement.
The former Rangers and Hibernian midfielder spoke after Ross McCausland and Dujon Sterling were injured for the Ibrox side at Easter Road.
Rangers defeated Hibs 2-0 in the tie, but the encounter was overshadowed by both players’ injuries.
Kevin Thomson on Dujon Sterling’s injury: “Worry”
Kevin Thomson took the opportunity to wish Hibs attacker Martin Boyle,
who was hospitalised after suffering a head injury, the best of luck with his recovery.
However, the former Rangers star was also discussing the situation at Ibrox and believes that any injury to Dujon Sterling would be a terrible blow to Philippe Clement.
“From a Rangers perspective, I think (Dujon) Sterling is a unique one,” Kevin Thomson told the BBC’s Scottish Football Podcast.
“Because, without doing Rossco (McCausland) any damage, he’s probably the one who,
if you think of it as the engine room of versatility, can cover at left-back and right-back.
“Obviously Tav is a machine, but when you look at John Lundstram, who plays almost every minute of every game,
and Tom Lawrence, who obviously plays in there, I think Sterling will be a concern for the manager.”
“He brings a lot of versatility and a lot of cover into a lot of positions so let’s hope for both of them it’s not long-term.”
Rangers utility player has stood up for Philippe Clement.
Dujon Sterling has developed as a crucial player for Rangers in recent months, playing in a variety of roles for the Ibrox club.
Sterling, a natural right-back, has also played left-back early this season and midfield after the turn of the year.
In recent weeks, due to a run of injuries on the flanks, Dujon Sterling has started on the right wing,
where he scored against Benfica and won a penalty against Hibs.
Rangers fans will wait to hear about the player’s injury,
but Kevin Thomson is correct in predicting that the Dujon Sterling situation will be a “worry” for Philippe Clement.
The utility man epitomizes the core of Clement’s squad message, and Dujon will be critical to our success this season.
