Two leading Celtic stars are now big doubts for April’s Old Firm trip to Rangers

At least, that’s what Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers says, adding that he’s “crossing his fingers” that both players will be fit to play following the impending international break.

On April 7, Rangers will host Celtic at Ibrox in a game that might be crucial in the Scottish Premiership title contest.

It goes without saying that Celtic has suffered a great loss with the absence of vice captain Cameron Carter Vickers and captain Callum McGregor for such a crucial match.

Will Callum McGregor’s injury affect Celtic?

With Callum McGregor sidelined due to an Achilles injury and Cameron Carter Vickers sidelined before of Rangers’ Scottish Cup victory over Livingston, the team will be keenly monitoring the situation.

“It always is (difficult) if you have your top players and your captain not available,” Rodgers said in reference to McGregor. There will be other players, of course, but his level of playfulness is above and above what many of our guys are capable of. Hopefully, we can investigate that further and he will be available following the international break.

“Hopefully it’s nothing too serious,” the Celtics boss remarked in reference to Cameron Carter Vickers. All we can do is wait and see. We can’t stop him from playing if the players are available and healthy; that applies to internationals. Obviously, the USA will call him up. Sure, but we’ll simply have to wait and find out the outcome of the scan.

Ahead of the trip to play Rangers, the remarks have caused anxiety in Celtic circles. Brendan Rodgers may possibly be barred from the dugout for the match due to remarks he made after the team’s defeat to Hearts.

It goes without saying that Rangers don’t have any injury issues of their own, and supporters will be skeptical of anything that comes out of Celtic’s camp.

Whilst there are lots of web reports stating Callum McGregor is gone for the season owing to the injury, there’s been no official confirmation from Celtic sources.

Since joining Celtic, Cameron Carter-Vickers has sustained injuries on a regular basis. At this point, it is evident that he is not included in the squad as a precaution.

For the Old Firm match, Rangers will be without a number of important players. Among them are Rabbi Matondo, who will make a comeback against Hibs, and Todd Cantwell and Abdallah Sima, who are getting closer to being fit.

However, there is still no word on when Ryan Jack, Scott Wright, Kieran Dowell, Oscar Cortes, or Danilo will return to the club, and the Gers’ injury woes are still present.

Ross McCausland and Dujon Sterling were both substituted during the Scottish Cup victory over Hibs.
