Lakers’ News: Lakers’ next big three painfully obvious

In the 2023–2024 NBA season, Anthony Davis has been nothing short of extraordinary. D’Angelo Russell, who is among the league’s most undervalued players, has been a quiet killer.

Additionally, Austin Reaves has subtly been moving forward on his path to fame.

But as the post-LeBron era approaches, is this the Lakers franchise’s future big three?

LA might already be home to the Lakers’ next big three.

In a few days, Davis will age 31 (happy cake day, AD!). Although he is unquestionably one of the best big men in the NBA, his troubled injury history raises questions about whether he will continue to be a key player. Having saying that, the unicorn has appeared in every game this season but four. A single season isn’t a large enough sample to jump to any conclusions, but it has been nice to see him on the court consistently.

Russell, who turned 28 a few weeks ago, has avoided any major illnesses over the last few seasons despite dealing with injury issues in the past. Russell is an Ohio State product. Reaves, who turns 26 in May, is one of the league’s hardest players, as seen by his flawless attendance record in 2023–2024.

Davis’s contract is controlled by the team through the 2027–2028 campaign. If Russell can maintain the scorching run he has been on since the beginning of the year, he could very well refuse his player option this summer in order to pursue a larger salary. The group might try to reopen trade discussions centred around  him and Dejounte Murray, but if the team can make another run and D’Lo can avoid another postseason letdown then there is no reason to not bring him back.

For the following two seasons, Reaves is completely under team control. In 2026–2027, he will choose to exercise a player option worth almost $15 million. It would take a lot to force him to leave the place where his professional basketball career began, and even if he does not develop into a major star over the course of the next several seasons, his contract will still rank among the association’s most team-friendly.

The three have started the season extremely productively in terms of statistics output.
