Chicago Bulls’ Forgotten Star Takes Big Step in Return From 2-Year Absence
Although Lonzo Ball hasn’t appeared in an NBA game since the 2021–2022 campaign, it appears that his comeback to the Chicago Bulls is becoming closer by the day.
Ball is still not expected to play in the 2023–24 season, but there is still hope that he could return at some time in the 2024–25 season, according to the most recent information.

For the past two years, Ball has been suffering with recurrent knee issues. His left knee has a tiny meniscus tear that required surgery at the beginning. Furthermore, despite having surgery, his knee issues have persisted.
Since then, the seasoned playmaker has need a few more knee procedures to be repaired. He is currently recovering and is expected to continue his once bright NBA career.
Bulls head coach Billy Donovan provided an update on Ball’s recuperation from the injury and his surgeries on Saturday before the team’s game against the Los Angeles Clippers. He noted that the team’s medical staff had provided favourable input.
As Ball advances in his rehabilitation, Donovan also disclosed that he can now run and make cuts.
He now wants to be able to play in 5-on-5 scrimmages by the summer, but there isn’t a set deadline for that.
“There have been some very good exercises where you can run, cut, jump, and do those kinds of things. According to Julia Poe of the Chicago Tribune, Donovan stated of Ball, “So he’s progressed into that and responded well.”
“Although it’s all controlled and involves no physical contact, he is cutting and running and doing other similar things these days.”
In any case, Ball was spotted laughing with his teammates during the Bulls’ game against the Clippers, which is encouraging. Even though he has had a difficult few years, it appears that his mental state is still stable.
The Chicago Bulls career of Lonzo Ball
In 2021, Lonzo Ball was acquired by the Chicago Bulls through a sign-and-trade agreement with the New Orleans Pelicans, raising expectations that he would become the team’s future point guard.
Ball seems to be the ideal backcourt mate for the outstanding scorer when Zach LaVine is along.
Lonzo is a strong defender and an excellent playmaker. His career averages were 11.7 points, 5.8 rebounds, 6.4 assists, and 1.5 steals per game when he moved to Chicago.
Many anticipated that Ball would make a splash in Chicago with the Bulls, playing alongside LaVine in a more prominent role.
Regretfully, he was limited to just 35 games with the Bulls during the 2021–2022 campaign before his injury that has since kept him out.
Hopefully, Ball is able to return in 2024-25. He has expressed his desire to continue playing, though the big question is if his knee will be able to hold up.
