Though the Scot ultimately opted not to sign a striker, West Ham manager David Moyes was rumored to be in the running to recruit Viktor Gyokeres last summer.

Nine months ago, Moyes had the opportunity to bring the 25-year-old striker from Coventry City to the London Stadium.

Ultimately, however, he signed a summer 2023 contract with Sporting for about €21.5 million (£18 million) (Coventry Telegraph). Now that the Portuguese powerhouses have signed him, that amount appears to be the best deal of the season throughout all of Europe.

Since then, the Swede has been playing for the Portuguese team in incredible form, and Moyes must be kicking himself for not signing the forward.

The striker, who is strong, diligent, and skilled, now has an £85 million release clause in his Sporting contract (Fabrizio Romano).

Only the top football clubs in the world will even consider coming close to that price with an offer.

Gyokeres has amassed an incredible 32 goals and 11 assists for Sporting (Transfermarkt) in 36 games across all competitions.

The Swede is a willing runner who excels at stretching the defense by relentlessly running into the channels. He can play with his back to the goal, hold up the ball, and turn defenders with the same strength in both feet.

The 25-year-old would have been a fantastic deal for the Hammers to sign for under £18 million, and I have no doubt that he would have been successful in the Premier League.

We regretfully have no prospect of signing Viktor Gyokeres at this time, as he would have been an ideal fit for West Ham.
