Benfica’s table £120m for Rangers ballmaker as boss vindicated
Rangers manager Philippe Clement has claimed that Benfica’s superior transfer budget makes them favourites for the Round of 16 Europa League clash.
As they get ready to play the Portuguese powerhouses and their lavishly assembled team for a spot in the Europa League Quarterfinals, the Gers are in Lisbon.
But how much of a difference exists between the two teams if Benfica are favorites to win the match because of their larger financial commitment?
Here, we examine both Europa League teams and the alleged transfer fees paid by each team. The findings are sure to catch some off guard.
It happens after, prior to the match, Philippe Clement publicly addressed the discrepancy in transfer fees.
Will Rangers supporters have a different outlook going into the two-leg match? Of course not, pfft.
We continue to expect our personnel to give it their all in the pursuit of advancement.
Rangers’ £34.25 million Europa League roster
Rangers has selected a 22-man Europa League roster,
three of whom are new from the first half of the season, for the team’s participation in the competition’s knockout stages.
Although teams are allowed to register 25 players,
we haven’t been able to do so this season due to a lack of homegrown choices on the roster.
Cue the irate tweets about Lawrence Shankland and Lewis Ferguson.
Nevertheless, the Rangers club has experienced a respectable level of investment,
with £34.25 million being spent on assembling this year’s team, albeit much less than Benfica.
GK: Kieran Wright (Academy), Robby McCrorie (Academy), and Jack Butland (free).
DEF: Ben Davies (£4 million), Borna Barisic (£2.2 million), Connor Goldson (£3.5 million), John Souttar (free), James Tavernier (£200k), and Ridvan Yilmaz (£5 million).
MID: Tom Lawrence (free), Todd Cantwell (£1.5 million), Mohamed Diomande (£4.5 million), Ryan Jack (free), and John Lundstram (£1.7 million).
FWD: Scott Wright (£150k), Rabbi Matondo (£2.5m), Kemar Roofe (£4.5m), Cyriel Dessers (£4.5m), Abdallah Sima (loan), and Fabio Silva (loan).
Cost of Benfica’s Europa League team: £153.9 million
You may be confident that Rangers manager Philippe Clement did not lie when he mentioned a financial imbalance.
When it comes to transfer transactions, Benfica and Rangers are in completely different leagues.
While the Ibrox team made the largest investment of £5 million to get Ridvan Yilmaz, Benfica paid £26 million on Orkun Kökçü.
It’s noteworthy that Benfica, who regularly spend over £10 million on players,
only has 19 registered names in their Europa League roster because so many of their players are B listers from the club’s Academy.
