Ibrox Latest:Philippe Clement announces Rangers’ £120 million budget for 2024.
Philippe Clement has disclosed what he read in a publication regarding the Benfica squad’s transfer value compared to his Rangers team prior to the encounter on Thursday (7 March).
Speaking to TNT Sports after his side’s 2-2 draw with the Primeira Liga champions, the Belgian revealed that the tabloid stated the hosts’ squad was worth £120 million more than his Gers players.
He went on to say that he couldn’t have asked for more from the Light Blues in the Portuguese city, as they put themselves in a great position to advance to the Europa League quarter-finals, with the second leg at Ibrox on March 14.
“Big challenge, you’ve seen the quality that they have,” Clement added. “I read in a newspaper that their transfer value is £120million more than ours, so we know it’s a big task, but I can’t ask for more than what my players gave me today.”
Rangers’ players proved their worth against Benfica.
It was never going to be an easy challenge for the Rangers players traveling to Lisbon, but they can be happy of their effort as they drew with Benfica.
The hosts have never lost a Europa League game at The Estadio da Luz, and the Gers were on the verge of breaching that record before a Connor Goldson own goal tied the game.
The Portuguese side displayed glimpses of their quality on the night, but Clement’s side matched them well and did not appear inferior to their opponents.
The two teams will face off again at Ibrox next week, and Light Blues fans will be sure that their club can do the job and advance to the competition’s quarterfinals.
However, Clement’s immediate emphasis will be on domestic competition, as his side faces Hibernian in the Scottish Cup quarter-finals on Sunday (10 March).
In other Rangers news, a journalist has suggested a possible Ibrox exodus as the club looks to begin its player-trading strategy.
