during verifying that one of their supporters had passed away in Lisbon during the Europa League match against Benfica, Rangers

released a statement expressing their “deep sorrow.”

Following the last 16 first leg match at the Estadio da Luz in the Portuguese city on Thursday night, supporter Thomas McAllister, 25,

died in a “tragic incident,” according to a club statement.

Rangers CEO James Bisgrove commented: “On behalf of the club, I want to pass on my sincere condolences to Thomas’ loved ones,

family and his friends. This news has hit everyone at the club extremely hard, as I am sure it will all of our supporters. Nobody should

ever go to a football match and not return home.

In the upcoming days and weeks, the club is prepared to help Thomas’ family in any way we can.

Rangers claim that since the incident—the details of which are still unknown—they have been in “continuous contact” with both the

Portuguese and the British authorities. The game ended in a 2-2 tie, and next Thursday at Ibrox Stadium,

Rangers will face Benfica for the second leg of the series.
