A new starter will rise at middle linebacker for Dallas in 2024
The linebacker room in the NFL was as strong as any throughout the first four games of the 2023 season.
Then came Trent Williams’ devious move against the 49ers in Week 5.
Micah Parsons was thrown into the path of Leighton Vander Esch by the offensive lineman. After the incident,
Vander Esch went to
the turf and was eliminated from the match.
In 2023, he didn’t play another down.
It’s possible that he won’t play another professional football down.
The Dallas defense suffered for the remainder of the season as a result of the needless act in a game that was already decided. The run
defense of Dallas suffered greatly in Vander Esch’s absence.
This spring, finding a replacement for Vander Esch—who hasn’t formally retired but seems unlikely to return—is a top concern.
For the time being, here are the starters’ results from 2023 and their future plans for 2024.
Leighton Vander Esch
It is important not to take a recurrent neck problem lightly. Vander Esch is still able to walk after six seasons in the NFL.
He might not be able to accomplish that if he takes another blow to the neck similar to the one he received in the San Francisco game.
It would be wise for him to pursue this as a career, and he will probably do so shortly.
In 2023, he racked up 30 tackles in almost five games and forced a fumble that resulted in an 11-yard touchdown return.
It was the first year he hadn’t recorded at least one sack since his debut campaign in 2018. However, he also participated in the fewest
games throughout a season in his career the previous year.
In 71 games, he will have 469 tackles and 3.5 sacks when he retires. In addition to forcing three fumbles, he had two fumble recoveries
and three interceptions.
