The story 49ers hire former Raiders offensive coordinator Mick Lombardi to join coaching staff first ran on NBC Sports Bay Area.

Coach Kyle Shanahan of the 49ers revealed to NBC Sports Bay Area on Thursday night that the team has signed Mick Lombardi, the former offensive coordinator of the Las Vegas Raiders, to a position on the coaching staff that has not yet been named.

Lombardi, 35, began his 49ers career in 2013 when Jim Harbaugh appointed him as the head coach’s assistant. He held a number of positions throughout that time.

Under head coaches Jim Tomsula, Chip Kelly, and Harbaugh, Lombardi worked as an offensive assistant, defensive assistant, and offensive quality control throughout the course of the following three seasons.

He spent two seasons as an offensive assistant with the New York Jets before moving on to coach for three seasons on Bill Belichick’s staff with the New England Patriots.

In 2019, Lombardi served as the wide receivers coach for two seasons after taking over as assistant quarterbacks coach. In 2022, he moved to the Raiders with Josh McDaniels, the former offensive coordinator of the Patriots.

Lombardi lost his job as well when the Raiders dismissed general manager Dave Ziegler and quarterback McDaniels on October 31.

After the season, the 49ers lost three offensive coaches, including former offensive passing game specialist Klint Kubiak. Kubiak joined the New Orleans Saints as their offensive coordinator.

Running backs coach and associate head coach Anthony Lynn joined the Washington team as the run game coordinator, while James Cregg, an assistant offensive line coach, joined the Raiders as the offensive line coach.

Michael Lombardi, a former NFL executive, is Lombardi’s father.
