Update:NFL Negotiating Possible $1 Billion Venture with Taylor Swift
The NFL has benefited from the friendship between Kansas City Chiefs standout tight end Travis Kelce and 14-time
Grammy winner Taylor Swift. Since the couple announced their relationship last September, a new crop of fans has
taken an unexpected interest in the game. And, of course, more interest equals more money.
Fortunately for the NFL, the partnership seems to be going well. In addition to Swift attending 13 Chiefs games this
season (that the public is aware of; one coach stated she was attending games prior to that), Kelce has been flying all
over the world to support her during her Eras Tour. The nine-time Pro Bowl tight end arrived in Singapore today to
complete the Asian leg of Swift’s global concert tour.
Taylor Swift helped the NFL make hundreds of millions of dollars in 2023.
When Kelce and Swift announced their relationship in September, a new fan group began to watch the NFL. Swift’s
followers, known as “Swifties,” began to follow the Chiefs and attend other games. This resulted in a phenomenon
known as the “Taylor Swift Effect,” in which teenage girls and their fathers developed an interest in something they
had never had before.
The rapid surge in viewers watching the game increased the NFL’s revenue. During the season, it was reported that
Swift’s appearance at games and the excitement it sparked generated more than $300 million.
As everybody who watched Super Bowl LVIII knows, Usher was the featured artist during the highly anticipated
halftime performance. However, he was not the league’s top choice.
According to reports, the NFL has invited Swift to do the halftime show for Super Bowl LVIII. However, her traveling
schedule and desire to simply watch Kelce as a fan/loved one kept her from accepting the role. However, this does
not mean she has ruled out doing it in the future, and it appears that the league wants it to happen as soon as
possible.
The NFL believes Taylor Swift might generate $1 billion in revenue if she performs at the Super Bowl next year.
According to The Sun, NFL business insiders say key members of the league are “desperate” to book Swift for the
Super Bowl LIX halftime performance. According to their projections, acquiring the 14-time Grammy Award winner
could net the league more than $1 billion:
“The commercials might cost $8.5 million each, representing an increase of $1 million or more. This year, it is projected that her presence generated a large sum of money, ranging from $700 to 750 million. If she is the featured artist at next year’s halftime show, it is likely to gross more than $1.3-1.5 billion.”
The issue, however, is that Super Bowl entertainers are not paid adequately for their performances. In reality,
practically all of them lose money after committing to do it. The NFL only compensates performers according to the
normal union contract, which is $1,000 per day. Performers are occasionally requested to pay for the privilege of
performing, in addition to paying their crew and everyone else who contributes to the success of their concerts.
Swift, of course, is a billionaire and does not “need” NFL money. However, it seems to reason that she (and any other
performer for that matter) would want a much larger sum than $1,000 if her performance might bring in $1 billion for the league.
