In 2017, Paul Pierce’s storied NBA career took a serious knock during his last season. In a widely watched TNT broadcast, Warriors forward Draymond Green ridiculed the legendary Boston Celtics player, who was playing his final NBA season for the Clippers, in a moment that went viral. The conversation between Green on the court and Pierce on the Clippers bench during the attempt at a free throw was captured by on-court microphones.

“They don’t love you like that, so stop chasing that farewell tour!” Green gave Pierce a scream. “You thought you were Kobe, but they’re not giving you a farewell tour, they don’t love you like that.”

Pierce offered his version of events on the Draymond Green podcast seven years later.

“First things first, I gotta address your viral s*** talking,” Pierce said to Green on his program. “Because I hadn’t gotten a chance to express my side of the story until after you gave yours. As soon as we start playing, I notice that you’re grabbing Blake Griffin, and I think to myself, “Damn, he be hella violent and he pushing on him.” I also think to myself, “What the f*** going on, man? Blake, hold on, man, bust his ass. No way can you allow him to do that! Since you are the snake’s head and everyone knows it, going after the snake’s head will get you shot.

“And I’m sulking at you, like, ‘nah, fuck that, dude. Fuck him. I’m shooting because I want everyone to be aware of our goals for this year. Come on, dammit. This right here is the league’s class. I believe you said what you stated. And I’m in the spotlight. To be very honest, I missed what you said. Unbeknownst to most, the microphone located beneath the basket is fully audible. I didn’t even hear what you said until after the game, when I was looking at my Twitter and thought, “Oh damn, he went back at me.” It seemed like you shot me at some point. Since you’re on the other side and I’m on the bench, I couldn’t really see.

Given that Pierce eventually gave Green some credit for the discussion and his trash-talking demeanor throughout his whole career with the Warriors, it is evident that any residual animosity between the two sides has faded over time.

Pierce remarked, “I love that you stayed true to who you are because you were like that even before you won.”

During the interview, Pierce also pushed Green to reveal his own farewell season, but the 34-year-old turned it down, stating he didn’t want to suffer the same fate as Pierce in terms of trash talk.
