Broncos RoFer Karl Mecklenburg Slams Russell Wilson’s ‘Leadership’

Numerous former Denver Broncos players have expressed their dissatisfaction with quarterback Russell Wilson’s stay on social media

or in public now that his time in the Mile High City is over. The most recent is Karl Mecklenburg, the Broncos Ring-of-Famer and one

of the most fearsome and productive defenders in franchise history.

“As a leader, Russell Wilson is not. “The foolishness that transpired during his first year at Denver—having a personal coach, an office

of his own at the facility, and a family at training camp—proved his self-centeredness,

” Mecklenburg wrote on X.Mark Schlereth and

other prominent former Broncos have questioned Wilson’s leadership. It’s obvious that a lot of folks are still bitter about Wilson’s first

year in Denver.

Sean Payton arrived in Denver and put an end to everything, while Nathaniel Hackett catered to Wilson’s seemingly endless whims,

which included the aforementioned office at Broncos HQ, the right to “co-author” the offense, and other benefits. Wilson was reduced

to just another player in the locker room, despite the Broncos’ expectation that he would take the lead.

I’m not here to criticize Wilson’s leadership, but it’s reasonable to wonder how successful he was given how harshly former Broncos

have criticized his methods. Given that Wilson won just 11 games over his two seasons with the Broncos, I suppose the outcomes of

those two years could provide an answer.As Nathaniel Hackett catered to Wilson’s seemingly insatiable demands, which included the

previously stated office at Broncos headquarters, the right to “co-author” the offense, and other benefits, Sean Payton showed up in

Denver and put an end to it all. Despite the Broncos’ expectation that Wilson would lead, Wilson was reduced to simply another player

in the locker room.
