A dependable member of the Eagles secondary is expected to retire. Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that cornerback Avonte Maddox is

being dismissed.

Schefter reports that as the parties continue to work out a new agreement, a reunion at a reduced expense may be possible. After

playing for Philadelphia for the previous six seasons, Maddox is now free to chase an outside deal.

There was still a year on the 27-year-old’s contract. He was supposed to carry a $9.68 million cap hit, but leaving now won’t result in

much more freedom. Removing Maddox before to June 1st will free up just less than $2 million in cap space; if Maddox had been

released after June 1st, that amount would have increased.

Due to a ripped pectoral muscle, Maddox had to miss a significant amount of time in 2023. Despite playing in just four games during

the regular season, he recovered in time to watch the Eagles lose in the wild card round. Throughout his 64 games, the former fourth-

round pick for Philadelphia started at least two of them, for a total of 38 starts. He recorded four interceptions, thirty-one pass

breakups, and eight forced fumbles throughout that time.

If he joins a new team, that production might make the slot man a desirable free agent. However, problems with coverage and injury

concerns could limit his value to a prove-it deal with Philadelphia or another bidder. Veterans Darius Slay and James Bradberry are

already under contract with the Eagles.

If a new deal with Maddox cannot be negotiated, then the slot will be a position worth keeping an eye on as both Slay and Bradberry

are expected to stay with the Eagles. With over $42 million in cap space as of Wednesday, the franchise had far more spending ability

than many other teams in the league. Some of those resources will probably be required to identify an impact replacement in the event

that Maddox leaves.
