Update:Ally McCoist has announced his all-time Rangers XI, and it includes a twist.
The club’s all-time leading scorer is looking forward to tonight’s Europa League last-16 match against Benfica in
Lisbon. Gers stunned Spanish rivals Real Betis in their final group game to claim first place with their first ever away
win over Spanish opposition, and their prize was the under-pressure Portuguese giants.
Following a Premiership defeat to Motherwell at the weekend, the attention turns temporarily from the title chase to
European activity, with McCoist scheduled to commentate. But he took the time to name his ideal Light Blues lineup
for TNT. As expected, it contains many of his colleagues from the 1980s and 1990s, who made history by winning
nine titles in a row, beginning with Graeme Souness and continuing with Walter Smith after taking over in Govan.
McCoist also told a humorous story about how the squad honored the late left wing wizard, Davie Cooper, at his
testimonial. He said, “I have an amazing story about Coop. His left foot was a wand, a complete wand. And, God
bless him, at his testimonial dinner, all of the boys had to bring him a gift.
“And what could we get for the man who had practically everything? And I thought, “I know what Davie Cooper
doesn’t have,” and we presented him with a right leg at supper!
“We went to one of the stores in town, acquired one of the model dummies, removed the right leg, and wrapped it all
up. We presented it to Coop during his testimonial dinner, and it went over pretty well.”
