Update:Chiefs Re-Sign TE Gerrit Prince to Reserve/Future Deal.

The NFL offseason is only a few days away from getting underway, but the Kansas City Chiefs are preparing for full-

fledged free agency by retaining one of their players. According to various rumors, tight end Gerrit Prince will re-sign

with the organization on a reserve/future deal. He’ll be on the 90-man offseason roster when the new league year

starts next Monday.

Prince, a Shawnee native who attended Shawnee Mission Northwest High School in Kansas, joined Kansas City’s

practice squad last August. He did not play any games during the regular season. Prior to joining the Chiefs, he spent

the 2022-23 season with the Jacksonville Jaguars after signing as an undrafted free agent.

Before joining the NFL, Prince played five seasons in college. After a good 2017 season at Butler, he went to UAB,

where he played 37 games over four years. His best performance came as a senior, when he caught 36 passes for 699

yards and 10 touchdowns.

For Prince, 26, this is another opportunity to stay at the professional level. While the Chiefs finished the season with

a lot of tight end talent behind Travis Kelce and Noah Gray, the free agency situations of Blake Bell and Jody Fortson

(restricted) should be monitored. Bell’s major value stems from his blocking abilities, but he’s also far past the age of

30 and offers little as a pass receiver. Fortson, while fascinating, has failed to maintain his fitness in recent seasons.

Neither player is guaranteed to return to the squad or earn significant playing time in the future.

As free agency ends and the early stages of the offseason program begin in April, organizational depth will be critical.

Even if Prince is an end-of-roster player, this contract guarantees him an opportunity to contend in the next weeks or

months. For the local product, returning to the club is a lovely full circle moment.
