Celtic and Rangers given hope by Fabrizio Romano in Bristol City transfer race

Bristol City re-signed Tommy Conway in January, but the striker is garnering interest from the Premier League and other top clubs, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Since his great breakthrough performance last season under Nigel Pearson, Conway has been a beacon of light in an uneven team. Given his improving trajectory, it is unsurprising that higher-level football clubs have kept an eye on the local product at Ashton Gate.

According to Football Insider, Nottingham Forest, Wolves, and Brentford, as well as Scottish Premier League powers Celtic and Rangers, have expressed an interest in Conway. Meanwhile, City’s Sporting Director Brian Tinnion has made it clear that the club want to sign the 21-year-old to a long-term contract, with his present agreement set to expire next summer.

Conway spent time on loan with Yate Town and Bath City in his early career before breaking into City’s first team at the start of the season. Conway had a breakout season for the Robins in 2022/23, scoring 12 goals in 37 appearances.

The 21-year-old has taken over as the club’s primary forward from Andi Weimann, but he missed the start of the season with a hamstring injury. He has been in great form since his comeback in September, scoring nine goals in 33 appearances in all competitions as he continues to grow.

Tommy Conway developments surface.

Following the revelation that Conway had been called up again to Scotland’s U-21 side, Fabrizio Romano issued the following information. Conway was born in Taunton, England, but is of Scottish origin through a grandparent who was born and raised in Stirling, and it appears that Conway wishes to represent the nation north of the border.

Romano stated, “Tommy Conway was called up by the U-21 Scotland team. At the present, there is still no agreement on a new deal with Bristol City, but no final decision has been taken.

“Several clubs are monitoring Conway in the Premier League and other top leagues as his current contract expires in June 2025.”

Conway has a remarkable eye for goal at such a young age, so it’s no wonder that both the Premier League and the Scottish Premiership are keeping track of him. His performance in the FA Cup, in particular, will not go ignored.

Conway scored the game-winning goal in the FA Cup against Premier League side West Ham United at Ashton Gate, after earning his team a replay in the first game at London Stadium.

He followed it up with his ninth goal of the season for the Robins in a 3-2 defeat to high-flying Ipswich Town Friday night, netting the second to put his team 2-1 ahead with a looping header into the far corner late on.

The Robins have excelled at selling key players for huge prices in recent years, so they will not be held hostage if forced to sell with Conway this summer.

Adam Webster, Alex Scott, Lloyd Kelly, and Antoine Semenyo have proven to be successful investments, and the recruitment team has been able to replace them with young talent who will develop into the next players on Bristol City’s conveyor belt.

Conway is an academy graduate, but one of a number of emerging talents, including Taylor Gardner-Hickman, Sam Bell, and Jason Knight, who will try to take Liam Manning’s team to the next step next year and get into the play-offs.

However, Conway will undoubtedly be among those who go unless agreements can be reached with the player, as he is in the final year of his contract at Ashton Gate.
