Chris Sutton laughs at ‘conspiracy theorists’ amid Rangers and Celtic VAR claims

Sutton and Ian Ladyman have dismissed “conspiracy theorists”‘ assertions that Celtic and Rangers are consistently unfairly punished by Scottish Premiership referee officials.

The Old Firm opponents are the major two teams to defeat in the league, with either Rangers or Celtic winning the title since 1984/85.

Despite their domination, Hoops and Gers fans have repeatedly alleged that referees are biased against them when it comes to title-changing decisions like red cards, penalties, and disallowed goals via VAR.

On Monday (4 March), Sutton told the It’s All Kicking Off podcast:

“There are these conspiracy theorists that believe Celtic and Rangers are always on the wrong end of certain decisions.”

Sutton then highlighted worries about a lot of officials potentially favoring the Old Firm teams,

to which Ladyman responded, “I don’t care. I believe it’s a lot of old crap. Referees are experts educated to make decisions.

“If they continue to make poor choices, they will no longer be considered elite referees.

It is not in their best interests to make decisions based on inexperience, lack of fitness, or bias.”

Are Rangers being handled fairly by Scottish Premiership referees?

Rangers fans were furious with referee Alan James Muir when he failed to dismiss Dan Casey for a dubious challenge on Ross McCausland in their 2-1 loss to Motherwell on Saturday, March 2.

The previous match, a 2-1 victory over Kilmarnock at Rugby Park,

saw David Dickinson chastised for awarding a penalty to Killie after John Lundstram blocked a cross with his arm but failing to award Rangers a penalty for a handball at the opposite end.

Human error is unavoidable in football, but it appears that Rangers bear the weight of wrong judgments more than others.

This could be due to fans simply becoming more loud, though.

Conspiracy theorists may point to the fact that the Gers have received the most red cards in the division this season,

with Scott Wright, Jose Cifuentes, Leon Balogun, and Dujon Sterling sent off thus far.

The decision against the latter in that list was very contentious,

with many anticipating it to be overturned following an appeal, which was unsuccessful.

However, the amount of fans making such charges against officials is likely to be in the minority. Mistakes are unavoidable,

no matter how frustrating they may be.
