Cowboys Projected to Make NFL Draft Trade for ‘Explosive’ Georgia Star

The Dallas Cowboys have a busy summer ahead of them, which includes deciding which players will be the team’s top draft

selections.

Amarius Mims of Georgia could be the solution in one area they could fix first: the outside offensive line.

Oliver Hodgkinson of Pro Football Network just unveiled his mock draft, in which the Cowboys are predicted to make an

intriguing selection.

The Cowboys trade with the Houston Texans for the No. 23 pick in order to choose Mims under the PFN method.

According to Hodgkinson, “the MDS pulls off the only automated trade in this 2024 NFL Mock Draft with Georgia OT

Amarius Mims falling down the order.” “It also makes sense, given that the Dallas Cowboys require youth

and talent on the offensive line.”

Tyron Smith and Zack Martin, the formidable combination from Dallas, are nearing the end of their careers.

Jerry Jones, the owner, has already extended Terence Steele and drafted Tyler Smith as part of his preparations.

That has worked, but another tackle is needed to permanently replenish the offensive line. Although Mims is a player with a

lot of potential, he might still need a year to mature.

Mims’ Lack of Playing Time at Georgia

In Pro Football Network’s draft profile for Mims, the offensive tackle is described as an “offensive tackle with elite mass and

length” as well as an “explosive, high-energy athlete” who almost move like a TE in space.

Even by pro standards, Mims’ 6’7″ and 340-pound stature is gargantuan. Mims boasts all the traits of a premier NFL

offensive tackle. The clear thing he’s lacking is experience.

In his three years at Georgia, Mims has only made eight starts.

He hasn’t played much, despite making an impression during the Bulldogs’ run to their second College

Football Playoff championship.

That is partly because of the wound. Surgery was necessary to address an ankle problem that sidelined Mims in 2023.

His season ended early even though there was a potential he could have returned later in the season

if Georgia didn’t make the CFP.

Part of the reason the Cowboys are being linked to offensive tackles is because Tyron Smith is set to be a free agent.

Dallas has benefited greatly from Smith’s 161 starts, but it might be time to part ways.

Smith is 33 years old and injuries have limited him to just 30 appearances over the past four years.

While he did make 13 starts in 2023 and was still effective as a second-team All-Pro selection, re-signing him may just not be worth it.

Everything hinges on what his contract requires. Spotrac forecasts Smith will sign a $7.5 million, one-year contract.

That makes sense for a player who is obviously still capable.

However, the Cowboys have a very limited amount of salary room and must already commit significant

sums to extend players like CeeDee Lamb.

They’ve been successful in recent years with their offensive line scouting, so it could be wise for

them to take a chance on a rookie.

Either way, whatever happens with Smith will likely dictate how the Cowboys approach the draft.
