BREAKING NEWS: Kansas City Chiefs Place Franchise Tag on 2024 Standout
The Kansas City Chiefs had to make a decision on what to do with the franchise tag because some outstanding players were ready to enter the free agency market.
On Monday, the team made their final selection. According to Adam Schefter, the Chiefs have officially placed the Non-Exclusive Franchise Tag on cornerback L’Jarius Sneed.
Sneed’s official salary for the 2024 season is $19,802,000, which allows for a potential trade because teams know what he is worth.
However, a trade will be more difficult because it will require money given to the Kansas City Chiefs as well as an agreed-upon long-term contract for Sneed.
La’Jarius Sneed has performed admirably since being taken in the fourth round of the 2020 NFL draft by the Kansas City Chiefs.
He’s appeared in 57 games and has 6.5 sacks, four forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries, 10 interceptions, and 40 pass deflections.
He also has two Super Bowl rings, so he is sure to up his price.
While a long-term agreement with the Chiefs is not out of the question,
Friday is the first official opportunity for clubs to contact the front office and negotiate pay for the 27-year-old cornerback.
Should the Chiefs trade La’Jarius Sneed?
However, the defense will lose three starting defensive linemen to free agency, including defensive tackle Chris Jones.
However, this is the most prudent thing the Chiefs could do in this position, short of agreeing to a long-term contract before the franchise tag.
This ties Sneed into a one-year contract and allows the team to shop him around rather than letting him depart for free.
While Chris Jones’ possible contract extension is likely to be a greater value, this locks in a cornerback to one year where they can get draft capital.
Given Jones’ age and position, Kansas City will collect more if he is traded than if he is franchised. Expect clubs to emerge as prospective suitors, but the ball is in the Chiefs’ court.
