Chiefs Projected to Add NFL Combine’s Biggest Winner to Patrick Mahomes’ Arsenal
The affluent get richer.
This might be the case for Patrick Mahomes and the defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs in the 2024 NFL Draft.
Few positions are more important to the Chiefs this offseason than wide receiver, as Kansas City’s receiving corps was plagued by drops and wild inconsistency throughout the 2023 season.
That could be about to change, as NFL Media’s Lance Zierlein predicts the Chiefs will select Texas explosive wide receiver Xavier Worthy with the No. 32 overall pick in the April draft.
“Travis Kelce won’t play forever,” writes Zierlein for NFL.com in his most recent mock draft.
“So, the Chiefs need to find another pass-catcher to complement Rashee Rice (who could be a rising star in his own right).
Worthy’s separation speed — he set a new combine record with a 4.21 40 — is distinctive,
allowing him to take the top off of defenses, and he’s much less linear than recently released veteran Marquez Valdes-Scantling.”
What Xavier Worthy Could Add to the Chiefs’ Offense
Worthy’s blistering speed paid off this season, as the explosive wideout snagged 75 catches for 1,014 yards and five touchdowns.
“Xavier Worthy is an explosive down-the-field threat who has the speed to consistently run past defenders,” writes Keith Sanchez for The Draft Network.
“He uses that quickness to establish other aspects of his game.
Worthy’s versatility in alignment allows offensive coaches to use him in numerous ways and place him in situations to take advantage of matchups and coverage.”
In three great seasons in Austin, Worthy caught 197 receptions for 2,755 yards and 26 touchdowns, averaging 14 yards per catch. After moving on from Marquez Valdes-Scantling,
and considering Kadarius Toney’s dismal start to his career, that type of production could be just what the Chiefs need to boost their offense in 2024.
Worthy, who can line up on the perimeter or in the slot, recorded six deep catches and five contested catches for the Longhorns last season, according to Pro Football Focus.
Worthy, like former Eagles standout DeSean Jackson, whom Andy Reid drafted, would provide a vertical threat for Mahomes and the Chiefs’ passing attack.
