Celtic announces a double challenge to SFA, raising serious issues

Celtic swiftly launched a two-pronged attack on the match officials in response to the happenings at Tynecastle.

The standard protocol would have been for Celtic to simply state that they were appealing Yang’s 15-minute red card, but instead, they questioned VAR.

The SFA used VAR technology in domestic competitions in October 2022. This was done with a flurry of matches, followed by a five-week World Cup break to assess and regroup.

It’s odd that the SFA chose to limit communication, offering no explanations about how VAR worked in real-world scenarios where there was a misunderstanding between the match official and the office-based VAR:

Celtic made the following statement late this afternoon:

The Celtic Football Club can officially announce that it will be appealing the red card that was given to Hyunjun Yang during Sunday’s Tynecastle encounter against Hearts.

In addition, we have written to the SFA expressing our grave concerns about the judgments taken during the match and the application of VAR.

As we have previously stated, Celtic has been attempting for some time to collaborate with the football authorities in order to raise the bar for officiating and VAR usage in Scotland. This is undoubtedly in the best interests of all parties involved in the game.

As Celtic files an appeal against the Yang ruling, Brendan Rodgers will probably be have to respond to a charge of defamation for his remarks made during the game.

Although Don Robertson had the final say after being asked to assess situations on the VAR monitor, the Celtic manager brought up John Beaton in multiple interviews and questioned his qualifications.
