Update:Ex rangers manager finally speaks up about his ibrox sacking

The Ibrox manager believes he deserved more time at Rangers and that he was not given the financial backing from

the board.

Gio van Bronckhorst has opened up about his Rangers sacking for the first time, admitting he felt let down by the

Ibrox board.

Van Bronckhorst was fired in November 2022, following a hectic year in leadership of the Light Blues. The

Dutchman won the Scottish Cup and led a spectacular run to the Europa League Final, only to lose on penalty

shootouts in Seville. GVB also made a fortune for the Glasgow giants by achieving Champions League qualification

for the first time in more than a decade, despite the fact that the Gers finished last in the tournament’s history, losing

all six group stage games.

Van Bronckhorst concedes it has been a rollercoaster year in charge at Ibrox, but he wishes he had received a portion

of the Champions League prize money to invest in his squad. The 49-year-old also believes he deserved more time to

turn things around after slipping nine points behind Celtic before being let go and replaced by Michael Beale.

He told FourFourTwo: “As far as I’m concerned, our squad could have been strengthened after we advanced to the

Champions League group stage at the expense of PSV in August.” Unfortunately, it did not happen. When I was fired

a few months later, I missed the support from above. Things did not go well at that moment, especially when we

went nine points behind Celtic, which is not permitted, but it’s also important to look at the big picture.

“I believe some of the board members should have handled the situation differently, especially given how we

performed in the prior campaign, but that is quickly forgotten. In November 2022, I had additional discussions with

the board and explained what needed to be done to turn things around. I hope Rangers can return to the top, as I will

always be affiliated with the team and remember the fantastic experiences. Unfortunately, I did not leave in the way I

had hoped.

Van Bronckhorst, who played for Rangers from 1998 to 2001, earning a domestic treble, also disclosed that he

turned down a previous overture from Ibrox while managing Feyenoord.

The former Arsenal and Barcelona player continued: “Rangers approached me while I was still at Feyenoord, but I

wanted to stay and compete in the Champions League. When they came in for me the second time, I had returned

from China.

“In a week, my entire world turned upside down. It was like returning home, and as a manager, I did have a home in

the city, specifically in the West End. My family lived in the Netherlands but frequently traveled to Glasgow. Finally,

it was a very intense 12 months: from my presentations to dismissal, we had two games virtually every week. There

was little time to focus on training, but we won the Scottish Cup and advanced to the Europa League Final.
