Rangers could have yet another chance to sign €30m ace, who clement said has’ great potential’
Philippe Clement’s time with Rangers has been excellent thus far, and now that he is back at Ibrox, the Belgian manager will be hoping to use his past success to help lead his team to a record-tying 56th league title.
With just five games left until the top-flight split,
the Light Blues have gone from trailing rivals Celtic by seven points to leading them by two points at the
top of the tree thanks to an incredible run of nine straight Premiership victories.
In the penultimate round of games before the break, the Old Firm will reunite at Govan on Sunday,
April 7, when Rangers welcomes Brendan Rodgers’ Hoops.
The division of the league in two for the last stretch of the season may seem unprecedented for those outside of Scotland,
but Clement, a former Genk title winner, knows better. The 49-year-old’s squad cruised into the post-split phase of the 2018/19 campaign,
winning just three games and amassing 63 points from 30 games.
Then, for the final ten games in the Belgian league, each team’s total points are halved.
This means that, in the end, Genk’s lead over closest rivals Club Brugge was reduced from seven points to four.
That didn’t really matter, though, because Genk won six of the post-split games, drew two,
and lost two to win their first league championship in eight years and qualify for the Champions League for the first time since 2011. The next season,
Clement joined local rivals Club Brugge and achieved even greater success,
leading the Belgian Pro League by 15 points after 29 games.
The COVID-19 pandemic threatened to deny the Antwerp-born coach back-to-back league titles with separate teams,
but after a meeting with the senior officials in the division,
Brugge was declared the champion and the balance of 11 games was cancelled.
The next season, the Pro League’s structure was slightly altered.
There were now 18 teams instead of 16,
and the top four teams from the regular season would instead play in the “championship” round rather than six.
But things haven’t always gone as planned.
Though they won just one of their six post-split games,
Clement’s team had an incredible 16-point advantage at the top going into the break.
However, they had to wait until the very end to win the league for the second time in a row,
finishing first on goal difference.
