Norwich Police breaks up fight at park, acknowledges public concern about use of force
A Saturday afternoon fight at Jenkins Park in Norwich led to two injured officers and one arrest so far.
Jaylen Jarmon, 23, was arrested Saturday and charged with breach of peace, assault on a police officer, second
degree assault, and interfering with an officer. Jarmon posted the $250,000 bond and was released, according to a
press release from the Norwich Police Department.
Law enforcement was called at 4:48 p.m. Saturday. A woman called the department saying a possible fight broke out
over an ex-boyfriend. Two officers saw 10-20 people fighting outside the fence nearest to the basketball courts. An
event of 200-300 people was taking place at that time. Other people from the event surrounded the officers as they
tried to break up the fight, and the officers called for backup.

The event was a 5v5 basketball tournament in remembrance of Camaury Clack, according to a notice circulated on
social media. Clack was slain in May 2023. Stancovitch Fabre, who was detained and accused of the murder, will
appear in court again on September 4.
Jarmon allegedly assaulted another man within feet of a cop while the police helped an injured man who was waiting
for an ambulance. According to the police press release, Jarmon allegedly persisted in attacking that individual while
the officer pepper-sprayed him.
What led to the arrest
They went to arrest Jarmon once one backup arrived. He allegedly began fighting officers after refusing to obey.
Jarmon allegedly beat up one cop and put him in a chokehold. Jarmon allegedly refused to release the officer from
the chokehold until he was tazed despite other cops using force on him. As the mob turned against the police,
Jarmon was led out of the area after being arrested.
Pepper spray was used on a number of those in the vicinity of the officers. The police press statement stated that the
people refused to leave the location and were belligerent towards the cops.
The event was assisted and shut down by officers from other departments, such as the Connecticut State Police,
Montville Police, and Ledyard Police.
The Norwich Police Department is aware of social media footage of the event. The department stated the videos leave
out what officers encountered. Body camera footage will be made public soon, but the identities of juveniles must be
redacted first.
According to the press release, “The Norwich Police Department takes pride in community involvement and
engagement and will work with community leaders to ensure events like this do not take place without the proper
public safety measures in place prior to the event occurring.” “We ask that you refrain from passing judgement on
the Norwich Police Department and its officers until all the facts are known, even though we acknowledge that any
use of force by an officer, taken at face value, is visually and emotionally distressing.”
The investigation is still ongoing as of Sunday, and additional arrests could be made. Call the department at 860-
886-5561 if you saw the incident or have any information or video.
