How many points Aston Villa need for Champions League qualification as top five picture becomes clear

Aston Villa have built momentum ahead of their final six Premier League games of the season, as Unai Emery’s side target Champions League qualification.

They moved within three points of third-placed Nottingham Forest after beating Southampton 3-0 at St. Mary’s on Saturday afternoon — their fourth successive league win.

Villa haven’t achieved that feat in two years, when the club went on to secure a seventh-place finish and qualification for the Europa Conference League in Emery’s first season in charge.

Villa currently sit on 54 points with six league games remaining. With that in mind, BirminghamLive has taken a look at how many points may be needed to finish in positions three through eight.

England has been one of the two best-performing nations in European competition this year, meaning that fifth place in the Premier League will be enough to secure Champions League qualification.

Average points totals from last five Premier League seasons…

3rd – 73pts

4th – 69pts

5th – 66pts

6th – 61.4pts

7th – 59.6pts

8th – 57.8pts

Average points totals from last 10 Premier League seasons…

3rd – 74pts

4th – 70pts

5th – 67.5pts

6th – 63pts

7th – 59.2pts

8th – 55.4pts

Over the last 10 campaigns, the average points total for a fifth-placed finish suggests that Villa would need between 13 and 14 points to match that benchmark. To reach this target, Emery’s side would have to win four and draw one of their remaining six games.

For a fourth-place finish, the requirement rises—Villa would need to win at least five of their final six matches based on the average points tally.

Looking beyond the Champions League places, 63 points has been the typical total needed for sixth place over the past decade. Villa would need three more victories to hit that mark.

To secure seventh, two wins would be enough to surpass the 10-season average of 59 points.

Here are Villa’s final six league fixtures…

Newcastle (H)

Man City (A)

Fulham (A)

Bournemouth (A)

Tottenham Hotspur (H)

Manchester United (A)
