Four Aston Villa players face Champions League suspension in PSG clash
Several Aston Villa players will be walking a disciplinary tightrope in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final against Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday night.
Unai Emery’s side progressed to the last eight after defeating Club Brugge 6-1 on aggregate in the round of 16 last month.
PSG, meanwhile, overcame Liverpool on penalties at Anfield following a 1-1 aggregate draw.
According to UEFA rules, starting from the first match of the league phase, players and team officials are suspended for the next competition match after receiving three cautions that did not result in a red card. Suspensions also apply after any subsequent odd-numbered caution (fifth, seventh, ninth, etc.).
Currently, Boubacar Kamara and Lucas Digne are both on two yellow cards and will therefore miss next Tuesday’s second leg at Villa Park if they are booked at the Parc des Princes.
UEFA have also clarified that Marcus Rashford and Axel Disasi are one booking away from a one-match suspension in the Champions League.
Both players received two yellow cards while playing for their parent clubs in earlier stages of the Europa League and Conference League, respectively.
All yellow cards expire upon the completion of the quarter-finals and are not carried forward to the semi-finals.
