Rangers boss Philippe Clement heaped admiration on James Tavernier after the Ibrox captain’s free-kick heroics against Kilmarnock.

The Ibrox manager was speaking after Rangers defeated Kilmarnock 2-1 at Rugby Park,

a potentially vital outcome in the Scottish Premiership title battle.

But if James Tavernier hadn’t twisted a genuinely world-class free-kick equaliser past Kilmarnock goalkeeper Will Dennis in the second half, things might not have turned out so well in Ayrshire.

There were several key moments in the game, but none were more significant than the magnificent long-range free-kick,

and Philippe Clement was questioned about James Tavernier following the play.

During his post-match press conference, Belgian manager Clement commended Tavernier for assuming responsibility for the Rangers team.

Taking the opportunity to applaud the Ibrox fans,

the Rangers manager believes the club’s captain’s attitude perfectly captures the feeling from the stands.

“He is always there,” Clement stated. He is always there.

He battles hard for the team since it is more than just scores and stats; it is also about defense.

“And he stays positive, he fights till the last second, he gives his all, and that mentality has spread across the team and among the fans.

“They were fantastic today, too. You might become negative because you are behind in the first half and it is difficult to create opportunities, but they kept chanting, remaining positive, and pressing.

“They know the team will do everything, everything,

everything to get these three points so this connection that there is now between the fans and the team is also major for me.”

James Tavernier also posted to Instagram after the Kilmarnock match to applaud his teammates for “digging deep” to secure a “important victory.”

The comment was not lost on several of the Rangers captain’s fellow Ibrox players,

who swamped the post with reactions following the victory over Kilmarnock.

Here’s how some Rangers players replied to James Tavernier’s Instagram post:

The Rangers captain’s brother, £15 million Bournemouth midfielder Marcus Tavernier, also responded to the tweet with a “😮‍💨” emoji.

The free-kick stunner against Kilmarnock brings James Tavernier’s Rangers tally for the season to 20,

with the famous Ibrox Hall of Famer now on 121 goals for the club.
