JUST IN: Marcus Rashford feelings clear, Bruno Fernandes’ opinion and Man United new decision

Manchester United loanee Marcus Rashford looks set to leave his boyhood club permanently but his future is still unclear

Manchester United winger Marcus Rashford has returned to his temporary club Aston Villa this week after featuring twice for Thomas Tuchel’s new look England squad this month.

Rashford dropped out of Gareth Southgate’s plans entirely last season after a poor run of form. The winger missed out on the Euros and was not reinstated when Lee Carsley became interim manager.

Since then, Rashford has fallen out with Ruben Amorim and was banished from his selection plans. He was moved out on loan to the West Midlands at the end of the January transfer window and this spell saw him produce four assists, earning him a recall to the England squad.

With domestic football returning this weekend, the Manchester Evening News rounds up the latest on Rashford and where his future lies.

Fernandes’ opinion

United’s captain Bruno Fernandes has not spoken publicly about Rashford since the winger dropped out of Amorim’s plans entirely. However, the Portuguese midfielder is a big fan of Rashford and anticipated the forward would be a one club player when he made his 400th appearance for the Reds last season.

“400 more to come,” Fernandes wrote on Instagram after Rashford celebrated the milestone but his prediction seems unlikely to come true now.

Villa’s feelings on Rashford clear

Aston Villa have tried not to comment publicly on the prospect of signing Rashford permanently but his new teammates have heaped praise on him. In a conversation with Radio Marca, the club’s sporting director Monchi hailed the positive impact Unai Emery has had not only on Rashford but Marco Asensio too.

“Unai is a coach who has historically helped players grow,” he explained. “Coming here makes players better, and that’s our main selling point, beyond offering a project that’s fighting for the top eight in the Champions League, that wants to continue growing, and that wants to keep playing in Europe.”

This could be considered to be an argument being made by Villa to encourage Rashford to stay in the West Midlands.

United’s decision made

Any hope for Rashford that a return to form and the England squad could be rewarded by a fresh start at United seems to have disintegrated entirely. The Manchester Evening News reported this week that the Reds are looking to complete ten departures in the summer transfer window.

Part of this plan would be to permanently sell Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Antony. The funds from these sales will be used to fund new additions to the squad but it remains to be seen whether Villa will be able to pay the £40m option to buy clause.

Journalist Fabrizio Romano understands that a permanent switch to Villa Park will only be green lit by the West Midlands club if their finances are in order dependent on whether they make Europe or not.
