Ibrox Review:David Edgar rages as ‘disgraceful’ footage emerges from win v Kilmarnock
Rangers were denied a “stonewall penalty” due to a “disgraceful” ruling during their Scottish Premiership victory over Kilmarnock, according to David Edgar.
Philippe Clement’s Light Blues retained their Premiership lead with a 2-1 victory at Rugby Park on Wednesday (February 28), thanks to second-half goals from James Tavernier and Tom Lawrence.
However, Heart and Hand podcast host Edgar was outraged after the final whistle when evidence emerged showing Lewis Mayo handling the ball in the penalty area in added time, which the referee and VAR both missed.
On Wednesday (February 28), he wrote on X: “Stonewall penalty, and for VAR to look at that and claim it’s not a penalty is disgraceful.”
Did Rangers receive a penalty in their win against Kilmarnock?
The penalty to Rangers issue has dominated Scottish football far too much in recent years, and Wednesday night’s match was just the latest in a long line of evidence demonstrating that the Gers do not receive preferential treatment from officials.
Mayo definitely makes contact with the ball with an outstretched arm, presumably preventing Cyriel Dessers from increasing to the Light Blues’ lead in injury time, but the VAR and referee both missed it.
While one goal may not have made a significant difference on the night, it could be crucial in the Premiership title fight this season. In May, the struggle between Rangers and Celtic will come down to the wire, possibly even to goal difference.
Hopefully, this moment will not come back to haunt the Gers and Clement in the long run, but Edgar and other pundits’ frustrations are understandable given the clarity of the scenario.
