Exact points totals expected for Stoke City, Derby, and Cardiff in Championship relegation battle
Following last weekend’s painful defeat at Millwall, Stoke City are definitely in
contention for Championship safety.
Mark Robins’ side appeared to be on track for a respectable 0-0 draw, a point,
and a glimmer of hope as they built on their midweek success against Blackburn Rovers.
However, the referee’s decision that Ben Wilmot had fouled Josh Coburn at a late
throw-in resulted in Mihailo Ivanovic scoring a contentious winner in the 92nd minute penalty.
Derby County’s third win in eight days, at Plymouth Argyle, reduced the distance to just one
point between them and the bottom three. Following Cardiff’s victory at Ewood Park,
Stoke are one of three teams separated by a point.
While nothing is determined in March, it is far from certain that Stoke will remain in the second tier.
According to Opta, John Eustace’s Rams have a fair chance of escaping instant relegation to League One,
but it will be close, and Stoke’s chances are greater. In truth, the Rams have a 35.50% risk of relegation
and are expected to complete the season with 47.31 points in 22nd place.
In comparison, Cardiff is expected to finish the season with 48.01 points in 21st place,
while Stoke will finish with 48.27 points in 20th place.
