Michael Dawson agrees with Paul Merson over Nottingham Forest star Morgan Gibbs-White, worrying claim made

Nottingham Forest defeated Ipswich 4-2 at Portman Road yesterday to put some daylight between them and sixth place in the race for Champions League football.

The Reds have one foot close to the competition. Nuno Espirito Santo has achieved great things at the City Ground already and now he will want to finish the job.

It’s been a traumatic week for Morgan Gibbs-White to a certain extent. Thomas Tuchel has this week named his first England squad and omitted the Forest captain.

The 25-year-old is in fine form and he helped himself to another assist yesterday but Tuchel clearly hasn’t been impressed sufficiently just yet.

Naturally, the German’s first squad has caused some intrigue, with a couple of pundits now throwing their weight behind the Forest star after his England bombshell.

Paul Merson and Michael Dawson agree on Morgan Gibbs-White

The attacker has been a dab hand in a number of positions lately with Espirito Santo occasionally deploying him as a central midfielder in the number eight spot.

Gibbs-White cherishes the England setup and quite clearly, he wants to be going to major tournaments with his country in the future.

Merson is now extremely worried for Gibbs-White’s chances of regular game time for England and thinks international football could now pass him by.

He said on Soccer Saturday: “I’m with Daws on (Morgan) Gibbs-White. He’s been a major part of Nottingham Forest’s success, a major part.

“He plays in a position where you’ve got to get on the ball and make things happen. He should have been in there, I don’t care what anyone says, Thomas Tuchel should have found a way to get him in there

“If I were him I’d be distraught, I don’t see how he gets back in now.”

Dawson agreed with Merson and said: “Baffled, surprised. I’m talking about players who are in form. Morgan Gibbs-White was a tip before the squad came out. I didn’t think he was a contender, he was in it for me, he was in the last squad but Tuchel has gone back to old players.

“The message that it sends out, Gibbs-White must be devastated. I was in disbelief.”

Morgan Gibbs-White stats 2024/25

If Gibbs-White was upset at missing out on the England squad, he certainly didn’t show it against Ipswich with the player registering another assist for his total.

The talented player is clearly keen to get Tuchel’s recognition at some point and all he can do is keep doing the right things with Forest.

Gibbs-White does have international experience. He’s won the under-17 World Cup and also helped the under-21s win the European Championship.

However, Tuchel clearly doesn’t think he has what it takes at this moment in time and the challenge for Gibbs-White is to simply prove him wrong.
