UEFA may have some unpleasant news for Nottingham Forest and Evangelos Marinakis.
Currently dominating the Premier League, Nottingham Forest has their sights set on winning
the Champions League.
In order to keep them guessing about a spot in Europe’s top club competition, Nuno Espirito
Santo orchestrated a spectacular 1-0 victory over Manchester City on Saturday, moving the Reds
four points ahead of the defending champions.
Forest isn’t there yet, of course. The Reds are in unfamiliar territory in the modern game,
having never participated in the Champions League since changing their name from the European Cup.
Although Forest did win two trophies in the 1970s and 1980s, the financial incentives for making
it to the competition are now much more generous than they were in the past. Evangelo
Marinakis has been busy making changes in the boardroom, and it may now be evident
why the Forest owner is making preparations behind the scenes.
According to a concerning report in The Telegraph, if Chelsea and Forest
don’t take a break from their other clubs, they risk being demoted
from the Champions League to the Europa League.
Todd Boehly, the manager of Chelsea, and Marinakis both have interests abroad,
which could be a challenge if they want to compete in the Champions League the next season.
To avoid Forest being eliminated from the Champions League before a single
ball has been kicked in 2025–2026, Marinakis might have to put his investment in Olympiacos on hold.
