John Mousinho accepts his Portsmouth side were fortunate not to give away a penalty in the first half of their home win over Leeds United.

The visitors felt they should have been awarded a spot kick in the early stages following Matt Ritchie’s wild swing at Daniel James in the box. Rob Jones, a Premier League referee, ignored the Whites’ protests and waved play on.

Pompey head coach Mousinho told Sky Sports: “At the time, I thought Matty had won the ball. In all honesty, I won’t hide behind it, I’m not sure he did. I can’t see it on the monitor but if it’s one of those that we got away with then we have got away with it.

“We have been on the end of plenty decisions that I don’t think have gone our way as well so sometimes you need that. When you are down at the bottom, often you don’t get those decisions and we haven’t for large parts of the season.

“I will be honest about it; if it’s a penalty, it’s a penalty and we got away with one and we have to ride our luck and move on.”

Portsmouth boosted their survival hopes by beating the league leaders thanks to Colby Bishop’s well taken strike just after the hour mark. “The three points are the most important thing for us at this stage,” admitted Mousinho, whose side are 17th in the table, 10 points clear of the drop zone.

“I was really impressed with the performance, particularly the way we came out after half-time. I thought we put them under relentless pressure for 15 to 20 minutes up until the goal. Naturally after that we sat off a bit but I think we were fully deserving on effort, work rate, application and good quality at times. I’m really pleased with the result and the performance.”
