A Rangers fan who died after being hit by a car in Istanbul has been named locally as Christopher Potter.

Christopher, who is understood to have been in his 40s, was in Turkey ahead of the Ibrox side’s clash against Fenerbahce, which is due to take place tonight.

It’s understood he was first hit by a car while crossing a road in the Beşiktaş area of the city before then being run over by another car. Turkish police have arrested two drivers.

According to local reports, Christopher, who died at the scene, withdrew money from an ATM on his way back to his hotel and tried to cross the road “at a red light”.

According to Ekol TV reporter Çağdaş Evren Şenlik, the incident occurred at around 4.30am this morning local time at the traffic lights in front of the Naval Museum in Beşiktaş.

The news outlet report that Christopher returned to his hotel by taxi after leaving an entertainment venue. When he reached the hotel, he went to a bank ATM across the road to withdraw cash.

According to eyewitnesses, Christopher, who was on his way back to the hotel after withdrawing money, was first hit by a vehicle and then run over by another vehicle while the traffic light was red for pedestrians.

An investigation has been launched into the incident and statements have been taken from the drivers involved.

Rangers said they were devastated to learn of the news as they sent their condolences to his loved ones.

A Rangers spokesperson said: “We are devastated to have learned of the passing of one of our supporters in a road traffic accident overnight in Istanbul.

“The immediate thoughts of everyone at the club are with their family and friends at this incredibly difficult time. We are remaining in constant contact with both the Turkish and British authorities over this tragic incident.”

Fenerbahçe also shared a condolence message on its official account. The club said: “Our condolences to Rangers FC club and community. We have learned with deep sorrow that a Rangers FC fan who came to Istanbul to support his team in the first match of the UEFA Europa League last 16 round, where Fenerbahçe will host Scottish representative Rangers FC, passed away as a result of a traffic accident. We would like to convey our condolences to the family of the deceased fan, the Rangers club and the community. Fenerbahçe Sports Club.”

A spokesperson for the Foreign Office told the Record: “We are aware of the death of a British man in Turkey and are in touch with the local authorities.”
