Tom Barkhuizen has not been given the chance to turn Derby County’s fortunes around,
despite the fact that they are at the bottom of the Championship.
The Rams have yet to secure their first victory of the 2025 season,
and their predicament has not improved even after John Eustace was hired as their new head coach.
Barkhuizen, who has only played 383 minutes of league football this season,
is in a similar situation. Despite getting a rare start against Middlesbrough—his second of the
season—he didn’t have much of an effect and was replaced after 65 minutes.
The winger’s days of being a mainstay in the second division are long gone;
his current level appears to be below that of the Championship, and the team may
be regretting not letting him go in January. Barkhuizen’s lack of playing time at
Pride Park has long been apparent to most club members; prior to the January transfer window,
he missed multiple games due to injury, and when healthy, Paul Warne rarely used him,
giving him only occasional minutes off the bench. As a result, many supporters thought he
would lock down a permanent move away in January, with Football League World’s Rams
fan pundit Shaun Woodward advising him to leave “for the sake of his career.”
