Since Nils Koppen took over as director of football,

the Ibrox club has shifted its attention to long-term investments and sell-on value, which Halliday claims Lundstram lacks.

The Motherwell midfielder did mention that Lundstram had deserved a new contract,

but given his high salary and age, it was indicated that the decision was not the best.

Halliday was speaking live on Clyde 1 Superscoreboard [26 February] when he said:

“I don’t think it matters whether he gets a contract or not; I think it might modify the conditions of the contract.

“I’m only guessing, but I believe he’d be among the top five highest earners at the club.”

Philippe Clement and Rangers are discussing the sellable assets within the  club,

and I think John Lundstram is probably in that bracket where he is no longer going to be a saleable asset.

“If he signs a two- to three-year contract with Rangers,

he will be in his 32-33 season and will have passed the point at which he will be sold for millions of pounds.

I believe one thing must be said:

he has demonstrated this year that he is more than qualified for a new contract.”

John Lundstram has won a new deal with Rangers.

After speculations surfaced that Lundstram was close to signing a new agreement to keep him at Ibrox,

with his existing contract scheduled to expire at the conclusion of the current season,

the decision was hailed with high appreciation considering his performances under Philippe Clement.

His availability and consistency in the midst of an injury-plagued season under Clement made him one of the most essential players in the squad,

and it was critical that the club sign him to a new contract.

Halliday’s questioning of the decision is understandable given Koppen’s new recruitment priority,

but exceptions must be made when dealing with players as talented as Lundstram.

Rangers

After all, putting together a new-look, younger squad at Ibrox will have advantages and disadvantages,

but maintaining experienced players like the midfielder can only help their desire to advance and develop, as well as strengthen the club.
